Catalytic converters purchase prices

Automotive catalytic converter (usually called “catalytic converter”) is a part of the car exhaust system, whose main task is to reduce the amount of harmful combustion gases emitted to the environment. Currently, due to very stringent standards for pollutants, catalytic converters are installed in all types of motor vehicles – from forklifts to trucks.
By “catalytic converter” we understand the part that is installed in our car. The device, as the name suggests, catalyzes a chemical reaction, but does not take part in it. For operation of the catalytic converter are responsible noble metals (platinum, palladium and rhodium), with which is covered the interior of the catalytic converter. These metals neutralize substances contained in combustion gases, thereby reducing their toxicity.
Ceramic catalytic converters
Catalytic converters are divided into three types: ceramic, metal and particulate filters (FAP/DPF). Ceramic catalytic converters are cheaper and are therefore more popular, they are however not as durable as metal catalytic converters. Ceramic block used in such converters heats up slowly, which makes it less efficient when comes to purification of combustion gases. In addition this type of catalytic converter is also less resistant to temperature.
On the other hand the use of ceramic catalytic converters results in quieter operation of the engine. Moreover in some models of modern cars (the ones, where two lambda probes are used), the use of a metal catalyst can cause incorrect work of the probe placed behind the catalytic converter.
Metal catalytic converters
Metal catalytic converters have the advantage over the ceramic: they heat up faster to a temperature required for combustion of toxic substances from the car exhaust. Metal used in this kind of catalysts – alloy of heat-resistant chrome-nickel steel and aluminum – is also more durable than ceramic inserts.
